In the fifteenth century, pear trees were cultivated for purely ornamental purposes.
The spread of orchards in the production area of the Emilia Romagna PGI pear dates back to the seventeenth century, and then spread to the rest of northern Italy in the early twentieth century.
Emilia-Romagna is also the European cradle of pear production with 40% of the continental total.

The Pear of Emilia Romagna IGP is one of the most cultivated fruits in the Region: it includes several municipalities in the provinces of Reggio Emilia, Ferrara, Modena, Ravenna and Bologna.
These pears generally have a very sweet and in some cases flavored flavor;
according to the variety, there are also variations of crunchiness, sweetness and juiciness.
